DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY

   About Department-

Geography is the science of detailed description of surface, atmosphere,hydrosphere,bio-world and explanation of causal relationship. The discipline ofGeography binds both the natural and human realms, acting as a bridge betweenthe natural and social sciences. Geographers study the processes in whichnature's complex and delicate balance is used to make life possible on Earth. The lack of knowledge of geography may lead to many problems at the localregional and global level. A graduate with geography acquires an understandingof how our environment is shaped by the interaction of natural and humanprocesses and also the understanding of the consequences of the problems suchas ozone layer depletion, climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation anddisasters.

In order to make theteaching-learning more effective, educational excursions and field survey workhave been organized for the students of the college in the nearby important areas like Madaku Dweep and Siddha Khol Falls etc. so that the sense of awarenessand understanding of the environment can be developed among the students. Apartfrom this, an important chapter of socioeconomic survey has been kept in the BAfinal year syllabus through which students can develop their geographical, economic and social knowledge in and around them by surveying the nearbyvillages.

Outcome –

Most part of theagricultural land of Bhatapara is non-irrigated so agriculturalpractice mostly depends upon monsoon. In the scenario of uncertainly in therainfall our students are learning to forecast the rain/Seasons and relatedevents. One of our 2017-2020 batch student Chintaram Sahu may be Cited as anexcellent example of forecasting the cyclonic rainfall & hence successfullysaved the harvested crop.

Best Practice –

As a part ofproject work in Environmental studies the students were allotted the task ofpreparing soak pit for harvesting the rain water. More than 1000 such soak pitswere prepared by the students in a single session of 2020-21. Looking at theproblem of water scarcity and lowering water table day by day such practice ofmaking soak pits in mass scale will surely resolve the water crisis of the areain & around Bhatapara.
